Impact action words

Alternatives to “reduced” on your resume

Identify what decreased and the action you took. Quantification is useful when it is accurate.

Words to consider

“Eliminated” means the problem stopped entirely; do not use it for a partial reduction.

Vague wording

Reduced onboarding delays.

More specific wording

Shortened onboarding handoffs by introducing a shared checklist for IT and people operations.

Illustrative example. Replace the details with your own work and verified outcomes.

Choose the meaning that fits

Shortened is precise for time or length. Lowered fits a level or amount, while cut is a direct but broad choice. Minimized can suggest the lowest practical level, so use it carefully. Explain the thing that decreased and the action associated with that change. If no comparison exists, describe the process adjustment rather than assuming it produced a reduction.

Office operations example

Shortened the weekly meeting agenda by moving routine status updates into a shared document.

The sentence names the change in the agenda. It does not automatically establish a measured reduction in meeting duration or total time spent by the team. This is an illustration, not a claim to copy into your own work history.

Use it in your own sentence

Start with the action you performed, add the project or process, then explain the purpose or result. Include a number only when you can verify it. Read the sentence aloud: a precise, ordinary word is usually stronger than inflated language.

Check three things before keeping the rewrite: could you explain the work in an interview, does the verb match your authority, and does the result belong to you or the wider team? Keep technical terms that accurately describe your experience. Changing a verb should make the sentence easier to understand without changing what happened. Use past tense for completed work and consistent tense for ongoing duties.
