Alternatives to “negotiated” on your resume
Identify the terms or agreement you helped reach.
Words to consider
- Agreed
- Secured
- Resolved
- Discussed
Discussed does not imply an agreement; negotiated should not imply an outcome that never occurred.
Vague wording
Negotiated with suppliers.
More specific wording
Agreed delivery dates with suppliers after reviewing stock needs and lead times with the operations team.
Illustrative example. Replace the details with your own work and verified outcomes.
Choose the meaning that fits
Negotiation involves working toward an agreement, so name the issue and your part in the conversation. Secured emphasizes an obtained outcome and requires evidence. Resolved fits a disagreement that was settled. If you collected quotes but another colleague agreed the terms, describe the research or coordination instead.
Event planning example
Resolved a scheduling conflict with the venue and confirmed revised setup times with the event team.
The agreement concerns scheduling, not a claimed discount or financial saving. This is an illustration, not a claim to copy into your own work history.
Use it in your own sentence
Start with the action you performed, add the project or process, then explain the purpose or result. Include a number only when you can verify it. Read the sentence aloud: a precise, ordinary word is usually stronger than inflated language.
Check three things before keeping the rewrite: could you explain the work in an interview, does the verb match your authority, and does the result belong to you or the wider team? Keep technical terms that accurately describe your experience. Changing a verb should make the sentence easier to understand without changing what happened. Use past tense for completed work and consistent tense for ongoing duties.
