Leadership action words
Alternatives to “trained” on your resume
State who you taught, what they learned and how you supported that learning.
Words to consider
- Coached
- Mentored
- Instructed
- Onboarded
“Mentored” usually describes ongoing development, not a single instruction session.
Vague wording
Trained new colleagues.
More specific wording
Onboarded new colleagues through guided practice and feedback on their first support cases.
Illustrative example. Replace the details with your own work and verified outcomes.
Choose the meaning that fits
Instructed fits teaching a defined skill or procedure. Coached suggests practice with feedback, mentored usually involves continuing development, and onboarded relates to helping someone start a role or process. Name the learner, topic and method. If you created training materials but did not teach the session, describe producing the materials rather than training the participants.
Customer service example
Coached new support colleagues through practice calls and reviewed their case notes with them afterward.
This example shows guided practice and feedback. Add a learning outcome only if you observed or assessed it, rather than assuming that attendance proved competence. This is an illustration, not a claim to copy into your own work history.
Use it in your own sentence
Start with the action you performed, add the project or process, then explain the purpose or result. Include a number only when you can verify it. Read the sentence aloud: a precise, ordinary word is usually stronger than inflated language.
Check three things before keeping the rewrite: could you explain the work in an interview, does the verb match your authority, and does the result belong to you or the wider team? Keep technical terms that accurately describe your experience. Changing a verb should make the sentence easier to understand without changing what happened. Use past tense for completed work and consistent tense for ongoing duties.
