Interior Design Cover Letter: Connect a Portfolio Project to a Vacancy
An interior design cover letter should help a studio understand how you work from a brief to a considered design contribution. Use one portfolio project to explain a decision, your own role and the material the reader can inspect. The original fictional example below demonstrates that connection without turning a team project into a claim of sole authorship.
Select a project that matches the studio’s work
BLS describes interior design work that connects functional space needs with design plans, materials and project coordination. Roles and qualification requirements vary. Read the vacancy’s actual scope and describe your current title and credentials precisely.
Fictional vacancy: Fieldroom Studio seeks a junior interior designer to support workplace concept development, maintain finish schedules and prepare presentation material under a senior designer. The application requests a portfolio with project context and each applicant’s contribution.
A complete fictional studio application
The applicant’s portfolio project is a fictional small-office refurbishment. The letter gives the reviewer a reason to open it and tells them what the applicant actually produced.
Original finished example
Dear Fieldroom Studio hiring team,
I am applying for your Junior Interior Designer position. Your emphasis on workplace concepts and careful finish documentation connects with the studio support work I have been developing. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to project teams while continuing to learn from experienced designers.
My portfolio includes a small-office refurbishment in which the client needed quiet work areas alongside a shared meeting space. Under the senior designer’s direction, I developed two furniture-layout options and prepared a material comparison for the presentation. I used the brief to explain the tradeoff between additional individual desks and a more flexible meeting area, then updated the selected option after the team reviewed the client’s comments.
I also maintained the finish schedule, recording the selected product, reference and outstanding sample decisions. When a proposed finish was unavailable, I assembled alternatives for review rather than substituting one without approval. The portfolio labels my layout and presentation work separately from the senior designer’s project direction and the wider team’s technical documentation.
I have included the portfolio requested in your application instructions. I would be glad to discuss the project decisions and how I could support Fieldroom’s concept and documentation work. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Casey Chen
Annotate the portfolio reference
The opening connects to two stated needs instead of praising an unspecified studio aesthetic. The project paragraph explains a brief and a design tradeoff. The documentation paragraph shows how the applicant handled an unresolved selection while respecting review responsibilities.
The letter should point to a real portfolio page or clearly named project in your own application. A reviewer should be able to find the described layout, understand the stage of work and distinguish your contribution from others’ work. Do not attach client material unless you have permission to share it.
Adapt a student project or a different design background
For an academic project, say that it was completed in a course or studio assignment. Explain the brief, your design reasoning and the feedback you used. Do not describe an unbuilt proposal as a completed client installation.
If your experience is decorating or styling, choose a vacancy that fits that scope and describe material selection, presentation or client communication honestly. Do not imply responsibility for regulated technical work or a credential based only on a software course. For a more senior vacancy, use a real example of the project phase and decisions you owned.
Make the letter and portfolio agree
Check the project name, dates, stage and role across the letter, resume and portfolio captions. Name software only when it helps explain a specific contribution. A long tool list will not explain why a layout decision met the brief.
Before sending, confirm the requested file size, number of pages and access settings. If you use a portfolio link, test that it opens without an unexpected sign-in. Keep the letter focused on the one project that best supports the actual vacancy.
Questions, answered
Can I use a student interior-design project?
Yes. Label it as academic, explain the brief and your own work, and distinguish a proposal from an installed project.
Should I include every software tool in the letter?
No. Mention tools only when they clarify the work you did. Use your resume or portfolio captions for the broader skills inventory.
