Architecture Cover Letter: A Building-Design Studio Example
An architecture cover letter should connect a building project, your contribution and the studio’s current needs. It should also make your professional status clear. This original fictional example is for an architectural designer working under a project architect; it does not imply that a degree, software skill or project credit is a professional license.
Identify the advertised role and project phase
BLS describes architects’ work across design, drawings and construction-related coordination, and explains that architects must meet licensing requirements. Check the requirements and permitted title for the relevant jurisdiction and position. Use your actual credential status rather than adopting a senior title from a template.
Fictional vacancy: Plainfield Architecture seeks an architectural designer to support design development and drawing coordination for small community buildings under a project architect. The application asks for a concise portfolio explaining personal contributions. The sample candidate is not licensed as an architect.

The letter points to a specific project phase and makes the applicant’s supervised role clear. All project and applicant details are fictional.
Original finished example
Dear Plainfield Architecture hiring team,
I am applying for your Architectural Designer position. My experience supporting design development and coordinated drawing updates connects with your work on community buildings. I am seeking a role where I can contribute careful project documentation while continuing to develop under experienced architects.
My portfolio includes a community learning-center project on which I worked under the project architect. During design development, I updated plan and elevation studies as the team reviewed the relationship between shared teaching space and quieter rooms. I maintained a list of the agreed revisions and checked that the drawing views reflected the same decisions before the next internal review.
When a revised opening affected an adjacent interior elevation, I flagged the discrepancy and prepared the relevant views for the project architect to review. I did not make the final design decision independently. The portfolio identifies the drawings I prepared, the project stage and the wider team’s responsibilities so that my contribution can be evaluated accurately.
I am not currently licensed as an architect and am applying for the designer role described in your vacancy. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my drawing coordination experience and the project examples included in my application. Thank you for considering me.
Sincerely, Sam Bennett
Make the portfolio reference useful
The project paragraph explains the design context before mentioning drawings. The revision example shows how the applicant checked consistency and raised a question. It does not claim to have designed and delivered the entire building.
In your own application, point to the relevant portfolio project or page and label its status: academic, competition, proposal, in progress or built. Identify whether images are your drawings, team-produced material or photographs used with permission. A letter cannot correct unclear authorship in the portfolio itself.
Adjust the letter for another career stage
For a student or recent graduate, use an academic studio project and state the assignment context. Describe a design decision, a drawing iteration or feedback you incorporated. Do not turn a hypothetical brief into a commissioned project.
For a licensed applicant, replace the sample’s status sentence with your exact current status where relevant, and choose evidence appropriate to the vacancy. If you led a project phase, explain what you decided and coordinated. If you supported it, use language that preserves that distinction. The name of a software package does not establish responsibility for the design.
Align the letter, resume and portfolio
Check the project name, dates, phase, employer and role across all three documents. Make sure that a drawing described as yours is correctly credited and permitted to share. Remove confidential client information and unreleased work when you lack permission.
Follow the studio’s submission instructions for portfolio length, file size and links. Read the letter once without the portfolio: the reader should still understand the contribution. Then open the referenced project: it should support the letter’s claim without requiring a guess about your role.
Questions, answered
Can an unlicensed applicant use this architecture cover letter?
The example is for a designer vacancy and explicitly states that the applicant is not licensed. Check the position and jurisdiction’s requirements and use an accurate title and status for your own application.
Should I discuss an unbuilt project?
Yes, when relevant. Label it as a proposal, academic project or other accurate stage, describe your contribution and do not imply that it was constructed.
