Relevant Coursework on a Resume: What to List and Examples

Include relevant coursework on your resume when it helps explain knowledge the employer needs and your work history does not yet demonstrate. A short selected list under Education is usually enough. If the useful evidence is an assignment you completed, give that work an academic project entry instead of expanding the course list.

Decide whether coursework earns its space

Coursework is useful when you are a student, recent graduate or career changer whose study connects directly to the role. It is less useful when recent paid work already demonstrates the same skill. You do not need to keep a course list simply because it appeared on your first resume.

Use three questions for each course: does the subject relate to a requirement in the vacancy, have I studied it enough to discuss it, and does it add information that is missing elsewhere? If the answer to any is no, leave it out or choose stronger evidence.

The University of Minnesota Duluth career guide treats coursework as optional and allows it within Education or as its own section. That gives you flexibility; it does not mean every course deserves a separate entry. Choose the smallest format that makes your background clear.

Select subjects using the job requirements

Imagine a junior data role that asks for database queries, basic statistics and clear reporting. A completed database course and statistics course may help. An unrelated elective takes space without answering those requirements. Select a few meaningful titles rather than copying your transcript.

Use recognizable course names. If a title is an internal code such as CS 341, add the official subject name so a reader can understand it. Do not rename an introductory class to sound advanced. Course titles show exposure; they do not establish professional mastery.

Keep completed and in-progress study distinct. If a relevant course is underway, label it “in progress.” Do not list a course you merely intend to take as an acquired skill. A short online course should not appear to be part of a degree program unless it actually was.

Computer science example: applying for a software internship

This fictional format selects classes connected to a software internship. Adapt the degree, institution, dates and titles to your actual records. The degree is still in progress; completed courses do not imply that the qualification has been awarded.

Coursework within Education

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, in progress — [Institution]

Expected graduation: [Month Year]

Relevant coursework completed: Data Structures, Database Systems, Software Engineering

Operating Systems — in progress

Business example: applying for an operations analyst role

A course list can show subject knowledge, but a completed assignment can show how you used it. In this fictional example, the applicant selects relevant classes and gives the spreadsheet work its own project entry. The project is academic, and its dataset is a teaching dataset.

A short course list plus an academic project

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration — [Institution] | Awarded [Month Year]

Relevant coursework: Operations Management, Business Statistics, Management Information Systems

ACADEMIC PROJECT

Inventory planning model — Operations Management | [Date]

Built a spreadsheet model using a teaching dataset to compare reorder quantities under different demand assumptions.

Checked formulas against worked examples and summarized where the assumptions limited the recommendation.

Social science example: applying for a research assistant role

Select courses for the actual research role rather than assuming only technical subjects matter. A qualitative research post may value methods, source evaluation or writing. The fictional example below shows the work completed without turning a class exercise into published research.

Relevant methods and a clearly labeled class assignment

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology — [Institution] | Awarded [Month Year]

Relevant coursework: Research Methods, Social Statistics, Qualitative Analysis

Academic project: Compared themes in an instructor-provided interview dataset and documented the coding decisions in a methods memo.

Choose a project entry when the output is the evidence

A course list answers “what did you study?” A project entry answers “what did you do?” Use a project when you can name the assignment, your contribution, the method and an output. Put it in Academic Projects or describe it directly beneath the relevant qualification.

For group work, identify your part. “Analyzed the survey responses and wrote the limitations section” is more precise than claiming the whole report. If you present a result, explain the context: simulated data, a classroom exercise or a real partner project. Obtain permission before sharing work that contains another person’s data.

Avoid repeating the same assignment in Education, Projects, Skills and the summary. Choose the main location for its details and use the freed space for another relevant example. A degree entry still needs its own accurate name and status; a project does not replace those facts.

Remove coursework when stronger evidence replaces it

Review the section for every application. After an internship or relevant job, replace a broad course title with a specific responsibility if it demonstrates the same capability more clearly. You can keep a specialized course when it fills a real gap, such as a method used in the target role that was absent from your previous job.

Before sending, verify course titles, completion status and dates against your records. Follow any employer request for transcripts separately. Do not include grades you cannot confirm, treat a course as a professional license or use a list of subjects to imply experience you have not gained.

Questions, answered

How many courses should I put on a resume?

There is no required number. Choose a short list that adds relevant information; three well-chosen courses can be enough. Remove classes that repeat what your experience already demonstrates.

Where does relevant coursework go on a resume?

Usually beneath the matching degree in Education. A separate section can work when coursework is central to the application. Use Academic Projects when the important evidence is work you produced in a class.

Can I list coursework without completing the degree?

Yes, if the courses are relevant and the degree status is clear. Describe completed coursework or attendance without implying that you earned the qualification. Use an expected date only when you are pursuing completion and have a reasonable basis for it.

Should I add future courses to match a job description?

Do not present planned study as knowledge already acquired. A course you are currently taking can be labeled in progress. Keep skills and project claims tied to what you can actually do.
