Plain Text Resume: A Complete Copyable Example and Paste Checks

A plain text resume carries your information without relying on fonts, columns, tables or bold styling. Use it when an application requests text or provides a field for pasting your resume. Keep the employer’s required upload format when one is specified; a text version is not a universal replacement for a PDF or Word document.

Use a single reading order

Penn Career Services notes that some application systems require copying and pasting resume content into a form. The practical question is whether the resulting text still tells the same story. Give each employer, title and date range its own understandable place in the sequence.

Use ordinary section names, blank lines between sections and simple hyphens for bullets. Do not align dates with long strings of spaces: the receiving field may use a different font or collapse them. Put important information in the main text rather than relying on a page header.

Copyable fictional plain text resume

The following original example is a complete short resume for an office-support applicant. Names, organizations, contact details and experience are fictional teaching material. Replace every fact before using the structure. The example.com address is a placeholder, not an application contact.

What survives when the styling disappears?

The name and contact line do not need bold type to be identifiable. Each role includes a title, organization and date range. Hyphen bullets separate the work statements. The education entry includes the qualification, institution and completion date on readable lines.

Before and after a layout-dependent entry

Fragile when pasted: “Office Assistant 2024–Present” with the employer placed in a separate column.

Safer sequence: “Office Assistant | Cedar View Services | Sep 2024–Present” followed by the relevant bullets.

For longer text, use three lines instead: employer, title and date range. The important feature is the clear association, not a specific separator.

Check the actual destination before submitting

After pasting, read the first and last line and compare each section against your source. Look for missing bullets, broken email addresses, substituted characters and a character-limit cutoff. A successful paste into a local text editor does not prove that every employer’s form will behave the same way.

If the form removes line breaks, use short labeled entries such as “Experience: Office Assistant, Cedar View Services, Sep 2024–Present.” Do not cram the whole document into one sentence. If the field is too small, follow the form’s instructions or use its permitted attachment option rather than silently losing part of the resume.

Keep your versions consistent

Update the plain text copy when you change dates, titles or achievements in the formatted resume. Read the text aloud once; missing context is easier to notice when there is no visual layout to suggest it.

If a text file is requested, save a real .txt file with a descriptive filename and reopen it before uploading. Do not rename a PDF to .txt. Avoid promising that plain text will pass an ATS: readable content and truthful relevance still matter, and systems differ.

Questions, answered

Is a plain text resume the same as a PDF?

No. Plain text stores characters and line breaks without the layout features of a formatted document. Follow the employer’s requested format.

Can I keep bullet points?

Use a simple character such as a hyphen and check the pasted result. Do not rely on decorative bullet symbols, indentation or columns remaining intact.
