Insurance Sales Agent Resume: Client Work, Licenses and Results

An insurance sales agent resume should identify the products and client work within your actual experience, along with relevant current license status. Show how you gathered information, explained the approved process and followed up. Keep sales activity distinct from underwriting authority and claims decisions.

Define the product and client context

BLS describes insurance sales agents as helping clients understand insurance options and selling policies. The work differs by product and setting. State the lines of business you actually handled, the type of agency or employer and whether you served new or existing clients.

Use the exact current license or credential you hold where relevant. Requirements depend on the work and jurisdiction, so check the vacancy and issuing authority. Do not imply authorization for a product merely because you completed general sales training.

Show the client conversation without promising an outcome

A strong example explains how you clarified a question and kept the process moving. If a client needed details outside your authority, describe how you gathered the question and referred it. Do not claim you approved coverage, guaranteed payment or decided a claim unless that was genuinely your authorized role.

Before: “Provided excellent insurance advice.” Better, when accurate: “Recorded client questions, explained the approved application steps and coordinated unresolved product questions with the designated specialist.” The second version gives an interviewer specific work to discuss.

Keep client names, health details, policy numbers and financial information out of public examples. Use a clearly fictional scenario if you need a writing or communication sample.

Separate sales, premium and retention measures

Policy count, premium volume, commission and client retention are different measures. If you report one, state the time period and whether it is individual or team activity. Premium volume is not your personal earnings.

For retention, define which customers or policies were eligible and what period was measured. A renewal contact is not the same as a completed renewal. Avoid using a percentage if you cannot explain the denominator and source.

Results wording to complete from records

Handled [verified count] [applications or policies] during [period] within [permitted scope].

Supported renewal follow-up by [specific action]; add a measured renewal result only if its definition and attribution are documented.

For a first insurance role, keep transferable work truthful

Relevant sales or service experience can demonstrate listening, accurate records and follow-through. Keep the original industry and title visible. Describe completed licensing or product training accurately, distinguishing an exam preparation course from a credential already awarded.

If the target role emphasizes prospecting, select genuine outreach examples. If it emphasizes an existing book of business, select service and follow-up evidence. Do not imply you owned a client portfolio when you supported another agent.

Before sending, verify all license names, dates and status. Review the resume for claims about authority or results that exceed your actual responsibility, and remove private customer information.

Questions, answered

Should I put my license on the resume?

Include relevant current status using the exact designation and jurisdiction. Follow the employer’s verification process and avoid unnecessary personal identifiers in a public copy.

Can I include premium volume as a result?

Yes when accurate and permitted, with a defined period and scope. Make clear that premium volume differs from commission or personal income.
