Workplace communication
Intrapersonal Communication: Turn a Private Assumption into a Question
Intrapersonal communication is communication with yourself. A private planning note is one practical example: you put an observation into words, notice your interpretation and choose what to ask next. This original workplace exercise shows that distinction without making a diagnosis or promising a psychological outcome.
Read the fictional meeting situation
Nadia sent a two-option display layout to a colleague at 09:00. At 14:00 she has no reply. A planning meeting is tomorrow. The shared brief requires a selection before print preparation, but it does not state a response deadline for today.
Those are the supplied facts. The University of Minnesota identifies intrapersonal communication as self-communication; the worksheet below is our original application to preparing a work conversation. It is not a record of what the colleague thinks.
Separate the observation from the interpretation
Original private reflection note
Observation: “I sent two layouts at 09:00. At 14:00 I have not received a reply.”
First interpretation: “My colleague dislikes the work and is avoiding telling me.”
Other possibilities: “They may not have read it, may be checking something, or may not know I need a decision.”
Unknowns: “Whether they saw the options, what information they need and when they can decide.”
Chosen question: “Have you had a chance to review layouts A and B? What would you need to choose before tomorrow’s planning meeting?”
Explain why the alternative possibilities are not new facts
The first interpretation goes beyond the record: a missing reply does not establish dislike. The alternative possibilities are hypotheses too. Listing them is useful because it exposes uncertainty, not because one is guaranteed to be correct.
Do not replace a negative guess with an equally unsupported positive assertion such as “They definitely love it and are just busy.” Keep the observable event and the uncertain explanation in different sentences. That leaves room for an answer that you did not predict.
Choose a next action that can resolve a real unknown
The chosen question asks about review status and missing information. It does not accuse the colleague of avoidance or pretend that a deadline was already agreed. If timing matters, state the genuine planning need and ask for a workable commitment.
The private worksheet and the outward message serve different purposes. The colleague needs the question and relevant context, not every speculative explanation from the private note. Keep other people’s confidential information out of any practice sample you share.
Original outward message derived from the private note
“I’m preparing for tomorrow’s planning meeting and need to know whether either layout is ready to discuss. Have you reviewed A and B? If not, when could you look, and is there information missing from my note?”
Revisit the note after receiving evidence
Suppose the colleague replies, “I could not open the attachment; please resend it.” Add that actual response to the observation record, then choose the next action: resend in an agreed readable format. Do not rewrite the earlier unknown as though you knew it all along.
For another practice round, suppose the colleague says the layout needs revisions. Identify what that answer establishes and ask which parts need changing. A useful reflection helps you frame an evidence-seeking conversation; it does not guarantee agreement or reveal another person’s intentions.
Questions, answered
Is intrapersonal communication always spoken aloud?
No. A private written reflection can also express communication with yourself.
Are alternative explanations facts?
No. They remain possibilities until additional evidence supports them.
