Multiple Positions at One Company: Resume Layouts for Promotions and Transfers

When a resume includes multiple positions at one company, show both the employer relationship and the dates of each role. Choose a layout that makes the change in responsibility easy to follow. A promotion, a lateral transfer and a concurrent assignment are different facts; the formatting should preserve that difference.

Choose a shared employer heading for sequential roles

A shared company heading can show continuity while giving each role its own title and dates. Put the most recent position first. Keep bullets attached to the role in which the work happened, especially when responsibility changed substantially.

Original fictional promotion layout

Pine Harbor Services | Boston, MA | June 2021–Present

Operations Coordinator | April 2024–Present

“Coordinate the weekly service handoff and track unresolved issues with their owners.”

Office Assistant | June 2021–March 2024

“Maintained routine contact records and prepared delivery logs for the office coordinator.”

The employer’s overall dates span both roles. The coordinator title does not apply to the earlier assistant period.

Use separate entries when the work or location differs

Separate entries may be clearer for a major function change, a long break before returning or an application form that requires one position per record. Repeating the company name is acceptable when it prevents ambiguity.

Original fictional lateral-transfer layout

Lake Studio | Denver, CO — Client Support Specialist | August 2024–Present

“Explain service request steps and coordinate follow-up with the responsible team.”

Lake Studio | Denver, CO — Production Administrator | January 2022–July 2024

“Prepared document packs and maintained the production team’s version list.”

This is a transfer between functions. Do not call it a promotion unless it was one. Add a short accurate transfer note only if it helps the reader.

Handle similar duties without losing the dates

For closely related roles, you can show both titles above a compact group of bullets, but the reader must still know which responsibility belongs to which period. A shared bullet group becomes misleading if it implies that a newer supervisory duty applied throughout the tenure.

A careful combined-title option

Elm Customer Services | May 2022–Present

Senior Service Associate | October 2025–Present

Service Associate | May 2022–September 2025

“Handle service enquiries and maintain follow-up notes across both roles.”

“Since October 2025, review new associates’ draft handoffs and explain missing information.”

If several bullets need this qualification, separate the roles instead; clarity matters more than saving a few lines.

Show simultaneous responsibilities explicitly

Overlapping dates can be accurate. Label a temporary or concurrent assignment so that it does not look like an unexplained duplicate job. Do not add two overlapping periods together to claim more years of experience.

Original fictional concurrent assignment

Meadow Logistics | Office Coordinator | January 2023–Present

Concurrent assignment: Training Rollout Coordinator | February–May 2026

“Organized the rollout checklist and tracked completion notes while continuing the office-coordinator role.”

The temporary assignment ended in May; the main role continues. If it was an informal task rather than a titled assignment, describe it as a project bullet instead.

Check the chronology before export

Write a simple timeline from your records and compare it with the resume. Confirm start and end months, actual titles, employment breaks and any change of employer entity. Use “Present” only for work you still hold.

If an online form separates employer and position fields, enter the information the form requests and inspect the resulting summary. Do not assume that a stacked layout will automatically become two accurate records. The resume and form should tell the same story even when they use different layouts.

Explain progression through evidence

A title change can suggest progression, but the bullets should explain the actual change: a broader process, a new review responsibility or a different customer group. Avoid adding a claim that you were promoted for exceptional performance unless you have a basis for it.

For an internal application, your promotion argument may need additional evidence. This layout guide addresses the work-history record itself; keep the dates and titles factual whether the reader is inside or outside the organization.

Questions, answered

Can I list the same company twice?

Yes. Separate entries are useful when roles differ or the form requires them. Keep the dates clear and the company name consistent.

Should I use my newest title for my entire tenure?

No. Show when each title applied. Otherwise the resume can imply that you held responsibilities longer than you did.
