Python Convert int to String: str, Padding and Identifier Limits
Use str(number) to convert an integer to ordinary text in Python. Use formatting when the display needs a stated width or padding. An integer stores a numeric value, not its original textual spelling, so converting it back cannot recover leading zeros that were already discarded.
Start with a small, explicit task
Display a synthetic numeric ID as ordinary text and as a four-character padded code. Compare an originally padded string after it is parsed as an integer, then join several converted IDs into a display line. The required width is an explicit exercise rule, not information stored in the integer.
Run the complete example
This original example was checked with Python 3.12.14. Save it as python_int_to_string.py and run it with Python 3.12. It uses only the standard library. The assertions check the stated results.
Expected output
7 0007
7
7, 12, 105
identifier = 7
plain = str(identifier)
padded = f"{identifier:04d}"
original_text = "0007"
round_trip = str(int(original_text))
report = ", ".join(str(value) for value in [7, 12, 105])
assert plain == "7" and isinstance(plain, str)
assert padded == "0007"
assert round_trip == "7" and round_trip != original_text
assert report == "7, 12, 105"
assert identifier == 7
print(plain, padded)
print(round_trip)
print(report)
Explain the result
str gives the ordinary representation 7. The format specification 04d requests a decimal integer with a minimum width of four padded with zeros, producing 0007. That width comes from the code’s rule. The source identifier is still numeric and unchanged after both operations.
The round trip shows information loss: 0007 becomes the integer 7, and str cannot infer that the original had four characters. Several different strings could produce that same integer. Keep identifiers as text when their spelling is significant, or retain the required format independently. The report generator converts each value before join, satisfying join’s string requirement.
Avoid these mistakes
Padding is a minimum width rather than a maximum allowed identifier size, and negative numbers need their own display consideration. Do not convert a formatted display string back and forth repeatedly while expecting all presentation details to survive. Keep numeric operations and output formatting as deliberate separate steps.
Questions, answered
Can str restore leading zeros?
No. In this example the integer contains only 7; the four-character width must be supplied separately.
Do I need str before joining integers?
Each item must be text for str.join. The generator here performs that conversion explicitly.
