Mastery Teaching: A Diagnostic, Corrective Task and Parallel Recheck
Mastery teaching is sometimes used to mean mastery learning: specify a learning objective, examine understanding, provide corrective support and check again. It can also refer to mathematics “teaching for mastery,” which is a different approach. This article demonstrates a small mastery-learning cycle, not a complete mathematics curriculum.
Set a concrete criterion rather than a universal percentage
The Education Endowment Foundation describes mastery learning in terms of specified outcomes, support and flexibility in time. Its summary distinguishes this from mathematics teaching for mastery. It does not make the fictional criterion below a universal pass rule.
Our narrow objective is to compare positive fractions with the same denominator and explain the comparison using equal-sized parts of the same whole. The exercise criterion requires both a correct comparison and an explanation of why the numerator matters when the denominator and whole are held constant.
Use a diagnostic that reveals the reasoning
Use a diagnostic that reveals the reasoning
Question 1: Which is larger, 3/8 or 5/8? Explain using equal-sized pieces of one same-sized whole.
Question 2: A learner says 2/6 is larger than 4/6 because 2 is smaller. What would you show them?
Fictional response: “5/8 is larger because 5 is bigger. For the second question, I do not know whether the pieces are the same size.”
Interpretation: the first choice is correct, but the explanation needs a link to equal eighths. The second response raises a useful condition to clarify. Do not infer full understanding from the correct first choice alone.
Provide corrective practice matched to the gap
Draw two same-sized rectangles, each divided into eight equal parts. Shade three parts in one and five in the other. Ask what remains constant and what changes. The denominator identifies equal-sized eighths of the same whole; the numerator counts how many are selected. Five such parts cover more than three.
Next draw two same-sized strips divided into six equal parts. Shade two and four parts. Have the learner finish: “The pieces have the same size because …; four pieces cover … than two pieces.” Check that the explanation refers to sixths of the same whole, rather than treating “larger numerator” as a rule for every fraction comparison.
Recheck with different numbers but the same demand
Recheck with different numbers but the same demand
Parallel Question A: Compare 4/9 and 7/9, using equal ninths of the same whole. Answer: 7/9 is larger because it includes seven equal ninths rather than four.
Parallel Question B: Explain why 1/5 is smaller than 3/5 under the same-whole condition. Answer: both use equal fifths; three cover more than one.
Boundary question: Does this explanation alone settle 3/4 versus 5/8? Answer: no. The denominators differ, so the pieces are not the same size. A different comparison strategy is needed.
Decide the next action from the recheck
If both parallel answers identify the equal parts and explain the comparison, move to a planned extension. If the learner gives only a memorized numerator rule, return to a representation and ask them to label the common whole and equal partitions. Give a further attempt rather than merely repeating the original question.
Record the diagnostic evidence, the support given and the recheck response separately. A useful note says what the learner explained, not simply “mastered fractions.” This objective covers a narrow type of comparison; it does not establish understanding of addition, unlike denominators or all fraction concepts.
Questions, answered
Must mastery always mean 80%?
No universal percentage is specified here. Define criteria that fit the objective and follow the course’s assessment policy.
Is mastery learning identical to teaching for mastery in mathematics?
No. The terms can refer to different approaches. This worked example is a corrective-support and recheck cycle for a stated learning objective.
