The Software Engineer/Control System Specialist supports the Process Control Division and collaborates with other North American Flat Roll facilities. The position is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting digital solutions and process control systems. The role contributes to AI and digital transformation initiatives, system modernization, and reliable production operations. The position requires strong technical capability, initiative, sound judgement, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented industrial environment.
As an integral member of a highly skilled and innovative team, this position supports North American Flat Roll and Great Lakes Works’ AI-driven digital transformation and system modernization strategy while providing critical support to production operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Development, design, testing, implementation, and continuous improvement of digital solutions and process control systems that enhance operation performance, reliability and efficiencyContribute to our AI / digital transformation by participating in the design, development, configuration, deployment and support of AI and digital solutionsPlay a key role in the new design and maintenance of modern supervisory and control systemsParticipate/Lead high impact projects that provide financial benefits that result in improvements to safety, quality, and or production yieldWork closely with the operations teams to understand requirements and identify improvement opportunities; translate into project specifications, including work estimates and forecasted benefitsDesign and maintain highly available and error resistant applications and systems that support the North American Flat Roll operationsSpecific Experience RequiredSoftware Engineer / Developer with minimum of 1-2 years of experience developing in Java, C, C#, C++, R, and/or PythonKnowledge of the Visual Studio IDEDevelopment experience in iFix, Cimplicity, IgnitionExperience with Tableau a plusExperience with SQL and Oracle a plusExperience in industrial manufacturing setting a plusComfortable with both Linux/Unix and Windows environmentsComfortable with AI and IIoT applicationsProgramming experience in Ladder Logic and/or Control Block LanguageAbility to read P&ID and electrical schematicsExperience with SCADA/HMI systemsTechnical Skills Required:Java, C, C#, C++, R, and/or PythonVisual StudioLinux and/or WindowsPLC Programming, SCADA systems, HMI designIndustrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP)Professional Skills Required:Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldEffective oral and verbal communicationInitiative to generate ideasMotivation to maintain a high level of productivity and self-directionAbility to work in team-oriented environmentsDesire to learn established systems for purposes of modernization and support
