We are looking for Principal Platform Engineer
Location: Remote, UK based
We're looking for a Principal Platform Engineer to help shape the next generation of Cazoo's technology platform.
We're undertaking a significant modernisation of our existing Azure-based architecture, moving towards more scalable, cloud-native and event-driven services. This is an opportunity to influence how our core platform evolves, improve the experience of our engineering teams and build the foundations that support our customer-facing products.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining software engineering, architecture and platform strategy. You'll spend around half your time actively contributing to engineering delivery, while also helping set technical direction, mentoring engineers and driving initiatives across teams.
Driving platform modernisation: Lead the design and delivery of cloud-native, event-driven services, including the safe retirement of legacy systems.
Shaping technical direction: Own and deliver the roadmap for core platform capabilities, working with Engineering, Product and Commercial stakeholders to align priorities.
Remaining hands-on: Write production code, review pull requests, solve complex technical problems and work directly alongside engineering teams.
Improving developer experience: Build and evolve shared services, tooling and engineering practices that make it easier for our teams to deliver high-quality software.
Championing engineering excellence: Improve scalability, reliability, observability and operational standards across our platform.
Leading through collaboration: Work closely with architects, Principal Engineers and cross-functional squads to turn architectural vision into practical solutions.
Developing our engineers: Mentor others, share knowledge and help establish consistent engineering standards across teams.
Embracing AI-assisted engineering: Help establish effective practices and guardrails for using AI development tools to improve productivity without compromising quality or security.
You'll have genuine ownership and influence, with the opportunity to make meaningful architectural decisions while remaining close to the technology and people delivering them.
What we ideally looking for;
Extensive backend or platform engineering experience, gained building and operating high-traffic, business-critical systems, ideally within a product-led technology business.
Strong cloud engineering expertise, preferably Azure, with a solid understanding of cloud-native architecture, managed services and infrastructure as code.
Proficiency in a modern backend language, ideally TypeScript/Node.js, although we're open to experienced engineers with strong transferable backgrounds, such as Java.
Experience with distributed and event-driven systems, including technologies such as Kafka, Azure Event Hubs or Service Bus.
Solid understanding of platform technologies, including Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, CI/CD and observability tooling.
Experience designing data-intensive services, working with relational and non-relational databases, caching and search technologies.
Demonstrable technical leadership, influencing architectural decisions, mentoring engineers and driving complex initiatives across multiple teams.
Sound engineering judgement, knowing when to build versus buy, how to balance technical debt against delivery priorities and how to make pragmatic architectural decisions.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development, using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot with an understanding of their benefits and limitations.
Experience in automotive, marketplaces, classifieds or other consumer-facing digital platforms would be advantageous.
We're particularly interested in engineers who combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative, pragmatic approach

Start with a role or skill you want to use in your next job. Use the location and role filters to narrow the results, then open a listing to review the description. A title alone rarely explains the level of responsibility, working arrangement, or experience a team needs. Compare those details before deciding which opportunities deserve a tailored application.
Employers use different titles for similar work. If an exact phrase produces no results, try a shorter title, a core skill, or an alternative name for the role. Remove one filter at a time to understand which requirement is narrowing your search. A broader search can reveal suitable work without asking you to change your actual qualifications.
For each promising listing, read the responsibilities and separate essential requirements from preferences. Note the location, schedule, employment type, and compensation when provided. Missing details are questions to confirm with the employer. A remote opening may still require a particular country, work authorization, or time-zone overlap, so check the full posting before treating it as a location-independent opportunity.
Choose a few examples that demonstrate the skills this employer names. Explain your contribution and its outcome, using accurate numbers where available. Put the most relevant experience first and keep your resume easy to scan. Avoid adding technologies, qualifications, or achievements simply because they appear in a description. Your application should make your existing strengths easier to understand.
Follow the employer’s instructions for resumes, cover letters, work samples, and screening questions. Review the exported file before submitting it: confirm that contact details are correct, text can be selected, and links reach the intended pages. A resume check can help you spot unclear writing before you apply. Its feedback is advisory and does not predict a hiring decision.
Listings are collected from external sources and may change after they appear here. The employer or recruiting destination controls whether applications are open. If an original link is unavailable, check the company’s careers page for the title or move to another opening. An employer website link is a place to check current vacancies, rather than confirmation that a particular job is still accepting applications.
Keep a simple record of the company, role, job reference, application date, and documents you sent. Record any follow-up instructions and the next action you plan to take. This makes it easier to prepare for interviews, compare opportunities, and avoid applying repeatedly to the same opening through different boards. Review your shortlist as employers update their listings and prioritize opportunities with clear requirements that match the work you want to do.
