Smartling was founded 16 years ago to make localization and translation seamless. Today, Smartling is profitable and backed by Vitruvian Partners, a global technology-focused investment firm, supporting company growth and expanding our market share and leadership position. We are the only cloud-based, AI-enabled translation platform that combines a Neural Machine Translation Hub and professional language services, empowering teams to collaborate in real-time to create experiences customers love.
Smartling is looking for a creative and passionate Senior Software Engineer to work remotely and build and support highly-scalable services that deliver best-in-class experiences for our clients. You will be working on a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to technical architecture decisions, and building robust, enterprise-grade systems. You will have the opportunity to work across the full technology stack and deliver high-impact results for the company. You will be joining an existing team developing and maintaining Smartling's translation management application that allows our clients and professional translators to manage the localization process for their websites and documents in an agile fashion.
AI-first development - AI agents write all new code, engineers own the design, review, and results
Continuous Deployment - multiple times daily
SOA - Service Oriented Architecture and APIs
Full test automation - we have no QA team
Own features end to end, from clarifying the problem to releasing in production
Work across repositories and technologies (Java, Node, React, and others) delivering all new code through AI agents, with Claude Code as your main tool
Take responsibility for the quality of everything you ship, including work produced by AI agents
Work with colleagues, product managers, and CSMs to clarify scope, trade-offs, and client needs
Cover changes with automated tests and take them through the delivery pipeline
Judge your work by value delivered to clients and the company, not by lines changed or tickets closed
Senior engineering experience, and either full-stack skills or readiness to become full-stack
Working proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Kotlin, or Node) and willingness to work in the others
Solid grasp of software architecture, including service-oriented architecture
Understanding of events, message buses, and asynchronous processing
Relational database background, including schema design, indexes
Computer science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, and runtime basics such as garbage collection
Hands-on experience with AI coding agents and the judgment to review what they produce
Engineering discipline. You can design, test, and explain every change you ship, including code written by an agent.
Broad knowledge across the stack rather than deep specialization in one tool
Ability to communicate clearly with engineers and non-technical colleagues
BS+ degree in computer science or equivalent experience
A home office setup conducive for working remotely, and the ability to work effectively as a remote team member*
Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases and large data sets
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
Curious. You learn new tools and areas quickly.
Value-driven. You choose the work that matters most to clients.
Detail-oriented. You verify what an agent produces before you ship it.
A team player. You work well with peers, product, and client-facing colleagues.
An individual contributor. You want to build and ship, not to manage people.
Growth - an opportunity to learn and advance your career
Modern tooling - Claude Code is a core part of your daily workflow
Culture - an energetic, value-driven, and fun culture and team spirit
Smartling is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are committed to building an inclusive global team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs, skills, and experiences.
*To work from home, you must have a strong internet connection, a quiet space, and a professional (distraction and clutter-free) background.

Start with a role or skill you want to use in your next job. Use the location and role filters to narrow the results, then open a listing to review the description. A title alone rarely explains the level of responsibility, working arrangement, or experience a team needs. Compare those details before deciding which opportunities deserve a tailored application.
Employers use different titles for similar work. If an exact phrase produces no results, try a shorter title, a core skill, or an alternative name for the role. Remove one filter at a time to understand which requirement is narrowing your search. A broader search can reveal suitable work without asking you to change your actual qualifications.
For each promising listing, read the responsibilities and separate essential requirements from preferences. Note the location, schedule, employment type, and compensation when provided. Missing details are questions to confirm with the employer. A remote opening may still require a particular country, work authorization, or time-zone overlap, so check the full posting before treating it as a location-independent opportunity.
Choose a few examples that demonstrate the skills this employer names. Explain your contribution and its outcome, using accurate numbers where available. Put the most relevant experience first and keep your resume easy to scan. Avoid adding technologies, qualifications, or achievements simply because they appear in a description. Your application should make your existing strengths easier to understand.
Follow the employer’s instructions for resumes, cover letters, work samples, and screening questions. Review the exported file before submitting it: confirm that contact details are correct, text can be selected, and links reach the intended pages. A resume check can help you spot unclear writing before you apply. Its feedback is advisory and does not predict a hiring decision.
Listings are collected from external sources and may change after they appear here. The employer or recruiting destination controls whether applications are open. If an original link is unavailable, check the company’s careers page for the title or move to another opening. An employer website link is a place to check current vacancies, rather than confirmation that a particular job is still accepting applications.
Keep a simple record of the company, role, job reference, application date, and documents you sent. Record any follow-up instructions and the next action you plan to take. This makes it easier to prepare for interviews, compare opportunities, and avoid applying repeatedly to the same opening through different boards. Review your shortlist as employers update their listings and prioritize opportunities with clear requirements that match the work you want to do.
