Job description

Position: National Bureau Chief, Financial Post Reports to: Editor-in-chief, Financial Post Position Type: Permanent, Full-Time (Existing Vacancy) Location: Toronto, ON (Remote)

The Company:

Postmedia is a Canadian news media company representing more than 110 brands across multiple print, online and mobile platforms. Award-winning journalists and innovative product development teams bring engaging content to millions of people every week whenever and wherever they want it.

This exceptional content, reach and scope offers advertisers and marketers compelling solutions to effectively reach target audiences. We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join our team.

The Financial Post is Canada’s leading business news brand and serves the National Post and other Postmedia properties, including the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette.

The Opportunity:

The Financial Post is looking for an experienced, ambitious editor to join our editorial leadership team as National Bureau Chief. Based in Toronto, the National Bureau Chief will play a central role in shaping our coverage of Canadian business and the economy from coast to coast. You will work closely with senior editors in Toronto and regional bureau chiefs across the country to identify the stories that matter and sharpen our national coverage. The role also includes directing a team of reporters in Ontario and Quebec.

This is a role for an editor with strong news judgment who can see beyond the day's headlines, identify the forces driving the news and help reporters produce journalism that is timely, authoritative and valuable to Financial Post readers.

What you'll do:

  • Work with regional bureau chiefs to identify priorities and compile a daily schedule of stories
  • Monitor our sister publications for business and economic coverage that has the potential to resonate with a national audience
  • Direct a team of reporters based in Ontario and Quebec tasked with reporting on their regional economies, including key sectors such as automotive and critical minerals
  • Set coverage priorities; develop story ideas; assign and direct daily stories; and provide timely, constructive editing as needed
  • Contribute to video, podcast and other multimedia offerings as needed
  • Help develop and oversee new editorial products, such as newsletters and in-person events, in Ontario and Quebec
  • Maintain high editorial standards, ensuring regional coverage meets the Financial Post's standards for accuracy, fairness, insight and relevance
  • Work with regional bureau chiefs and senior editors to build national editorial franchises that distinguish the Financial Post and deepen our coverage of Canadian business and the economy
  • Contribute to the broader leadership of the newsroom, assisting the senior editorial team with editorial oversight and other priorities as needed

Who you are:

  • You are an experienced editor with at least five years in a daily newsroom, ideally with a background in business, financial or economic journalism
  • You have excellent news judgment and can quickly identify the stories, trends and developments that matter to our readers
  • You understand the difference between reporting what happened and explaining why it happened, what is driving it and what comes next
  • You are an excellent writer and editor who can work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines
  • You are comfortable working across different formats, from breaking news and daily analysis to explanatory journalism, enterprise reporting and long-form features
  • You have a strong understanding of Canadian business and the economy, and an appetite for developing that knowledge further
  • You are a collaborative leader who knows how to work effectively with reporters, editors and newsroom leaders

Compensation:

Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location. Base Salary: $85,000 - $100,000

If you are interested in this position, please apply with a cover letter, resumé and links to recent work.

We thank in advance all applicants for their interest, however only those candidates under consideration will be contacted. Only candidates legally eligible to work in Canada will be considered. No phone calls or agencies please.

Prepare your application

Use the description above to assess your fit for Postmedia Network Inc.. This checklist is guidance from Resumize, rather than additional requirements from the employer. Imported listings can be shortened or change after collection, so confirm the complete description and current availability before sending an application.

Match requirements to evidence

Identify the responsibilities and skills the employer explicitly names. For each important requirement, choose one example from your work, education, training, or projects. Explain what you did, how you did it, and what changed as a result. Include a measurable outcome when you can support it. If you lack a requirement, describe related experience accurately instead of adding an unfamiliar skill to your resume.

Put the most relevant examples near the top of your resume. Keep job titles, dates, qualifications, and contact details consistent across your application materials. Use the employer’s terminology when it describes your experience accurately; a copied list of keywords does not explain your contribution. A short, specific bullet is easier to review than a paragraph that mixes several unrelated duties.

Check the working arrangement

Confirm the location, schedule, employment type, and any eligibility requirements on the employer’s site. A remote label does not establish worldwide eligibility or flexible hours. If compensation, benefits, equipment, travel, or contract duration are missing from this listing, write down your questions for the recruiter. Do not assume details from another opening at the same company apply to this role.

Review before submitting

Follow the employer’s requested file format and application instructions. Open your exported resume and check that its text is selectable, its sections read in order, and its links work. Proofread names, dates, and contact information. Share confidential work samples only when you have permission, and use an anonymized example when necessary.

Submit through a trusted employer or recruiting destination. If the original listing has disappeared, search the employer’s careers page for the title rather than assuming the vacancy remains open. Save the application date, job reference, and the version of your resume you sent. Those details help you prepare for a later conversation and avoid submitting conflicting information through several job boards.

Review your resume for writing and readability feedback, or browse other openings if this opportunity is unavailable.
