Job description
Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
This role sits within our AI-native product team, where design directly shapes how people experience intelligent, AI-powered products. You will define and own the UX vision for AI experiences - designing interfaces that make AI capabilities intuitive, transparent, and trustworthy - while leading and mentoring a team of designers, researchers, and content strategists.
Primary Responsibilities:
Design AI Experiences
Design intuitive interfaces for AI-powered features, including conversational search, assistant and chat UIs, and recommendation modules
Establish design patterns for transparency, trust, and explainability so users understand what the AI is doing, why, and how much to rely on it
Design for the uncertainty, errors, and edge cases inherent to AI systems - low-confidence responses, graceful fallbacks, hallucination mitigation, and user feedback and correction loops
Craft human-AI interaction models that keep users in control and set clear expectations of AI capabilities and limitations
AI-Assisted Prototyping & Design
Use AI-powered design tools (e.g., Figma AI, Claude, and similar) to rapidly generate initial design concepts, wireframes, and layouts
Accelerate ideation and exploration through AI-assisted workflows, moving from concept to high-fidelity prototype at speed
Develop and refine effective prompts to steer AI design and content generation toward accurate, on-brand, and accessible outputs
User Research & Synthesis
Plan and conduct user interviews, usability tests, and other research to validate AI experiences and surface real user needs
Use AI assistants to process and synthesize qualitative feedback, accelerating analysis of interview transcripts and open-ended responses
Map user pain points, journeys, and mental models to ground design decisions in evidence
Champion data-driven design, translating research insights into measurable UX improvements
Design Systems & Prototyping
Build and maintain scalable design systems and component libraries, including patterns specific to AI interactions
Create interactive, high-fidelity prototypes that clearly communicate intended behavior to stakeholders and engineers
Ensure design consistency, usability, and accessibility across web, mobile, and other digital touchpoints
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Product Managers to align UX strategy with product roadmaps and evolving AI capabilities
Collaborate closely with Engineering to ensure design feasibility, prompt accuracy, and seamless implementation of AI features
Present design concepts, research insights, and recommendations to executive stakeholders
Advocate for user-centered design across the organization
Leadership & UX Strategy
Define and own the UX vision, strategy, and design standards across AI-native products
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of UX designers, researchers, and content strategists
Establish UX best practices, processes, and design systems
Oversee end-to-end UX design, from discovery and wireframes through prototypes and final execution
Review and provide constructive feedback on design deliverables
Translate complex requirements into simple, intuitive user experiences
Manages and is accountable for professional employees and/or supervisors
Impact of work is most often at the local level
Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
10+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with at least 3 years in a leadership or principal role
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams
Demonstrated experience designing AI- or ML-powered product experiences (e.g., conversational interfaces, chat/assistant UIs, search, or recommendation systems)
Solid portfolio demonstrating expertise in user-centered design, interaction design, and visual storytelling
Understanding of human-AI interaction principles and of patterns for transparency, explainability, and trust in AI products
Solid understanding of accessibility, usability, and inclusive design principles
Hands-on proficiency with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma AI, Claude) and solid prompt engineering skills
Proficiency in design tools - preferably AI-driven tools - and front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React/Next.js)
Demonstrated solid communication and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Portfolio evidence of designing for AI-specific challenges such as uncertainty, error handling, and user feedback and correction loops
Background in software engineering or computer science
Familiarity with healthcare, finance, or other regulated industries
At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
