Job description

Smile.io is the world’s largest loyalty platform, providing easy-to-use reward programs that help scaling ecommerce brands transform one-time sales into repeat purchases from loyal customers. Over 100,000 brands use Smile to turn transactional purchases into passionate repeat shoppers.

We are looking for a Junior Product Designer at Smile, to help create thoughtful, intuitive experiences for merchants and their customers while building your skills across the full product design process. You’ll work closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers to turn ideas and user needs into polished product experiences, with plenty of support, feedback, and opportunities to take on more ownership as you grow.

This is a full-time remote role working Monday - Friday with a need for your schedule to overlap significantly with existing team hours (9 AM - 3 PM EST).

At this time, only applicants based in Canada will be considered.

🌍 About the Design Team

Our design team is collaborative, curious, and focused on creating thoughtful experiences that make a real impact for merchants and their customers. Designers here don't just hand off mockups and wait to see what ships. We work closely with product and engineering, but you don't need permission to make the product better. With AI and modern tooling, if you spot a part of the experience that isn't good enough, you're encouraged to own it end to end: find the problem, shape the fix, prototype it, and, if you're up for it, push it to production yourself.

You’ll also get the chance to work on a product used by thousands of merchants and millions of shoppers worldwide, while being part of a flexible, remote-first team that values collaboration and continuous growth.

We want to cultivate designers who take initiative, and we'll back you when you do. We value strong craft, clear communication, openness to feedback, and a willingness to keep learning. As a growing team, there are lots of opportunities to build your skills, take on more ownership over time, and contribute to how design evolves at Smile.

🛠 What you’ll Work on

  • Support the end-to-end design process for product features, from early concepts and user flows through prototypes and final visual design
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and designers to turn user needs and business goals into thoughtful product experiences
  • Contribute to Smile’s design system by creating, refining, and maintaining reusable components and patterns
  • Support design needs across the business when needed, including our website, social media, sales materials, and other marketing initiatives
  • Use AI tools throughout your design process, including turning designs into working prototypes that help engineers implement faster and closer to the intended experience

👋 What We’re Looking For

  • You don't need years of experience. Internships, freelance work, and personal projects all count. What matters most is your eye for craft, how you think, and that you're eager to learn and grow
  • You have projects you can share: a website, a Figma file, a live project. Personal and side projects count just as much as client work. One great project that shows how you approach design is more than enough, and bonus points if it shows how you used AI along the way
  • You're comfortable working in Figma, with a strong foundation in visual design, layout, typography, and UX principles. If you're exploring newer tools like Paper, Pencil, or Elyx, we're all for it
  • You're already using AI in your design work or side projects, and you're excited to explore how it can improve the way we work at Smile
  • You enjoy collaborating with others, asking questions, receiving feedback, and iterating on your work
  • You’re curious, organized, and excited to continue developing your product thinking and design skills

✅ You'll Be Successful In This Role If You

  • You take initiative. When you see something in the product that could be better, you go after it
  • You approach design problems with curiosity and take the time to understand the user before jumping to a solution
  • You communicate your thinking clearly and are comfortable sharing work in progress with teammates
  • You’re open to feedback and use it to make your work stronger
  • You balance attention to detail with the ability to move work forward and iterate.
  • You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and are comfortable asking for support when you need it

⭐ Nice to Have (But Not Required)

  • Experience designing for SaaS, e-commerce, or other digital products
  • Experience working within or contributing to a design system
  • An interest in motion design, prototyping, or creating delightful product interactions
  • Experience working on a remote or distributed team
  • Some comfort with front-end code, or experience building with AI coding tools

🤝 You'll Enjoy Working With Us If You

  • Are open to trying new things, being wrong, and learning from mistakes
  • Prefer collaboration and shared success over individual heroics
  • Want to move fast, deliver real value, and own the progress of your work
  • Look for opportunities to improve how work gets done - for yourself and others

💰 Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $85,000 - $95,000 CAD
  • In addition, our generous total rewards package includes things like flexible vacation, a remote work allowance, and a monthly credit to use at any of the store 100,000+ stores that uses our software.
  • Check out our careers page to learn more.

Prepare your application

Use the description above to assess your fit for Smile.io. This checklist is guidance from Resumize, rather than additional requirements from the employer. Imported listings can be shortened or change after collection, so confirm the complete description and current availability before sending an application.

Match requirements to evidence

Identify the responsibilities and skills the employer explicitly names. For each important requirement, choose one example from your work, education, training, or projects. Explain what you did, how you did it, and what changed as a result. Include a measurable outcome when you can support it. If you lack a requirement, describe related experience accurately instead of adding an unfamiliar skill to your resume.

Put the most relevant examples near the top of your resume. Keep job titles, dates, qualifications, and contact details consistent across your application materials. Use the employer’s terminology when it describes your experience accurately; a copied list of keywords does not explain your contribution. A short, specific bullet is easier to review than a paragraph that mixes several unrelated duties.

Check the working arrangement

Confirm the location, schedule, employment type, and any eligibility requirements on the employer’s site. A remote label does not establish worldwide eligibility or flexible hours. If compensation, benefits, equipment, travel, or contract duration are missing from this listing, write down your questions for the recruiter. Do not assume details from another opening at the same company apply to this role.

Review before submitting

Follow the employer’s requested file format and application instructions. Open your exported resume and check that its text is selectable, its sections read in order, and its links work. Proofread names, dates, and contact information. Share confidential work samples only when you have permission, and use an anonymized example when necessary.

Submit through a trusted employer or recruiting destination. If the original listing has disappeared, search the employer’s careers page for the title rather than assuming the vacancy remains open. Save the application date, job reference, and the version of your resume you sent. Those details help you prepare for a later conversation and avoid submitting conflicting information through several job boards.

Review your resume for writing and readability feedback, or browse other openings if this opportunity is unavailable.
