Job description

Location: New York, NY (on-site)Type: Full-timeTeam: EngineeringReports to: CTO About Becoming You Labs Becoming You Labs is a behavioral-science company that helps people and organizations live with clarity, alignment, and purpose. Originating in an academic research setting and refined in real-world environments, we build practical tools, assessments, and learning experiences that support meaningful decision-making. Our method centers on aligning authentic values, natural aptitudes, and energizing, economically viable interests to create purpose-driven paths in careers, relationships, and life. We serve individuals, families, educators, institutions, and enterprises, providing science-backed systems that turn insight into action. The work is research-driven and human-centered, designed to be an enduring resource at key inflection points in life and leadership. About the Role This is a hybrid role for an engineer who wants to ship product and work close to the data underneath it. Our assessments are not quizzes. They are psychometric instruments with real scoring models, norming considerations, and validity requirements — and they sit inside consumer and enterprise web applications that have to be fast, accessible, and secure. We need someone who can build the application layer and also reason rigorously about what the instrument is measuring, how results are scored, and whether the numbers hold up. You will work across the full stack on our assessment platform while owning a growing surface of data work: scoring pipelines, item and response analysis, measurement infrastructure, and the analytics that tell us whether our products actually change how people make decisions. What You'll Work On Assessment delivery. Build the interfaces and services that administer our instruments to individuals, cohorts, and enterprise clients — including offline and privacy-constrained administration modes.Scoring and results. Implement and refine scoring logic, then turn raw scores into results experiences people can actually act on, including AI-generated narrative reporting grounded in validated inputs.Instrument analysis. Run item-level analysis on live response data: reliability, distribution and ceiling effects, item discrimination, factor structure. Surface findings to our behavioral-science team and help decide what changes.Measurement infrastructure. Extend our product analytics and BI layer so the team can answer questions about completion, drop-off, cohort differences, and downstream outcomes without filing a ticket.Enterprise readiness. Contribute to the data architecture behind tenant isolation, pseudonymous identity, and the privacy requirements that large institutional clients bring with them. Responsibilities Engineering Design, build, and maintain end-to-end features across front-end interfaces and back-end services and APIsModel and evolve relational schemas that support both transactional product needs and analytical workloadsWrite clean, tested, maintainable code; participate in code review; follow secure coding practicesOwn performance, reliability, and observability for the surfaces you shipImprove the technical stack and development practices as we scale Data Science Build and maintain scoring pipelines and the data models behind assessment resultsConduct psychometric and exploratory analysis on response data; document methods and findingsPartner with behavioral scientists to translate research design into production implementation, and to feed production data back into instrument revisionBuild dashboards, queries, and self-serve tooling for product, marketing, and leadershipBring statistical judgment to product questions — including saying when the data doesn't support the conclusion someone wantsWhat We're Looking For Required Demonstrated experience building and shipping end-to-end web applications, front-end through databaseStrong TypeScript and modern React; comfort with CSS and building accessible, responsive interfacesStrong SQL and relational data modeling; you can reason about query performance, not just correctnessWorking proficiency in Python (or R) for data analysis — pandas, numpy, and the statistical library ecosystemApplied understanding of statistics: distributions, correlation and its limits, regression, reliability, significance and what it does and doesn't tell youFluency with Git, CI/CD, and modern development toolingClear written communication, especially when explaining quantitative findings to non-technical partnersBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Psychology, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience Strongly preferred Experience with psychometrics or measurement: classical test theory, item response theory, factor analysis, scale validationExperience with Next.js, Supabase/PostgreSQL, and Vercel, or a close equivalentExperience building on LLM APIs in production, with an eye toward evaluation and output qualityFamiliarity with product analytics (PostHog, Amplitude, or similar) and BI tooling (Metabase, Looker, or similar)Exposure to enterprise requirements: SSO, tenant isolation, SOC 2, data residency A plus Background or genuine curiosity in behavioral science, assessment design, or human-centered product workExperience at an early-stage company where the boundaries of the role were yours to define Why This Role You will have unusual proximity to the science. Our assessments are built on real research, and the person in this seat gets to see the full loop — instrument design, live response data, scoring, results delivery, and what people do next. That loop is where the interesting problems are, and it's rare to get to work on all of it. Our stack is TypeScript, Next.js, Supabase, Vercel, and Python, in an NX monorepo. The engineering team is small, senior, and ships continuously. Becoming You Labs is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate all applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic. Compensation: $150,000 - $180,000 base and benefits.
