Job description

Are you a former journalist or PR professional who can explain complicated things clearly, and stay calm when people are upset?

Smartland Energy is looking for a communications professional to be the clear, trusted voice between our company and the communities where we work.

Our projects, including data centers and energy infrastructure, raise real questions for local residents about water, power bills, land, and their future. Some people are curious. Some are worried. Some are frustrated and distrustful. We need someone who can communicate with all of them honestly, accurately, and respectfully.

This is not a generic content writing job. You'll be working on high-stakes communication where accuracy matters and every word counts.

What you'll do:

  • Write clear, accurate public communications, including FAQs, fact sheets, emails, web updates, social posts, and print materials, on technical and sometimes sensitive topics
  • Research complex subjects and work with engineers, leadership, and experts to make sure everything is correct before it's published
  • Draft responses to resident questions and concerns, even when people are upset, with honesty and empathy
  • Plan and execute multi-channel campaigns such as public meeting announcements across social, email, web, and print
  • Prepare materials and messaging for community meetings and stakeholder outreach
  • Keep one consistent, trustworthy voice across every channel
  • Track what's working, such as open rates, attendance, questions received, and sentiment, and report on results
  • Handle sensitive and not-yet-public information with complete discretion

You're a great fit if you:

  • Have a background in journalism, communications, PR, or a related field (Mass Comm, DevComm, English, Humanities, etc.)
  • Write excellent, natural English and can simplify technical topics without dumbing them down
  • Research first and ask questions instead of guessing
  • Know the difference between what's known, what's projected, what's undecided, and what can actually be promised, and communicate each clearly
  • Stay steady and respectful when dealing with frustrated or skeptical people
  • Can work independently while coordinating closely with leadership
  • Have experience running campaigns across multiple channels and measuring results

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience in energy, utilities, infrastructure, government, NGO, or crisis communications
  • Worked with US or international clients before
  • A portfolio of published work such as articles, press releases, or campaign materials

This role is NOT for you if:

  • You mostly write SEO blogs or product descriptions
  • You rely on AI to write for you
  • You avoid conflict or difficult conversations
  • You're looking for a short-term gig

How to apply:
Please send the following to :

  1. Your resume
  2. 2–3 writing samples, ideally at least one on a technical or sensitive topic
  3. A short answer (150–250 words) to this question: "A resident believes our project will drain their well and raise their power bill. Write the first reply you'd send them."

Start your application with the subject line "Clear and Honest" so we know you read the full post. Applications without it won't be reviewed.

Loc: International

Salary: $560 bi-weekly

Prepare your application

Use the description above to assess your fit for Smartland. This checklist is guidance from Resumize, rather than additional requirements from the employer. Imported listings can be shortened or change after collection, so confirm the complete description and current availability before sending an application.

Match requirements to evidence

Identify the responsibilities and skills the employer explicitly names. For each important requirement, choose one example from your work, education, training, or projects. Explain what you did, how you did it, and what changed as a result. Include a measurable outcome when you can support it. If you lack a requirement, describe related experience accurately instead of adding an unfamiliar skill to your resume.

Put the most relevant examples near the top of your resume. Keep job titles, dates, qualifications, and contact details consistent across your application materials. Use the employer’s terminology when it describes your experience accurately; a copied list of keywords does not explain your contribution. A short, specific bullet is easier to review than a paragraph that mixes several unrelated duties.

Check the working arrangement

Confirm the location, schedule, employment type, and any eligibility requirements on the employer’s site. A remote label does not establish worldwide eligibility or flexible hours. If compensation, benefits, equipment, travel, or contract duration are missing from this listing, write down your questions for the recruiter. Do not assume details from another opening at the same company apply to this role.

Review before submitting

Follow the employer’s requested file format and application instructions. Open your exported resume and check that its text is selectable, its sections read in order, and its links work. Proofread names, dates, and contact information. Share confidential work samples only when you have permission, and use an anonymized example when necessary.

Submit through a trusted employer or recruiting destination. If the original listing has disappeared, search the employer’s careers page for the title rather than assuming the vacancy remains open. Save the application date, job reference, and the version of your resume you sent. Those details help you prepare for a later conversation and avoid submitting conflicting information through several job boards.

Review your resume for writing and readability feedback, or browse other openings if this opportunity is unavailable.
